New York Statue of LibertyNew York's world-famous Statue of Liberty symbolizes the American dream of freedom and the sheer size of this beautiful landmark is quite breathtaking. Construction of the Statue of Liberty began in Paris in the 1870s, after a suitable site in New York had been chosen. The completed monument remained in Paris from 1884 to 1885, whilst fundraising for the cost of transportation continued.

A statue fund gained a large donation from the readers of 'New York World' and a 24,000 ton foundation was laid on the island, ready for the monument's arrival. The metal framework inside the statue was created by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who later became famous for his stunning Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The statue was finally unveiled in 1886, at a large ceremony that women were not allowed to attend. Receiving more than two million visitors every year, New York's Statue of Liberty is a 15-minute ferry ride from Battery Island, and inside is an exhibition describing the landmark's history and restoration over the years.

The statue is 151 feet / 46 meters high and is also known as 'Liberty Enlightening the World'. It is possible to climb to the top the statue, where there are some wonderful views of the city's skyline from within the crown.
