There are many excellent galleries to choose between, with the biggest and the best including the New York Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Frick Collection.

Particularly commendable in New York is the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) on West 53rd Street, which was established as far back as 1929 and now enjoys visitor numbers exceeding 2.5 million people. Another exceptional gallery is the Whitney Museum of American Art, where the works of many emerging American artists are showcased and encouraged.

The stunning Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is situated in a gleaming white building in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This modern structure boasts a large glass dome which floods the interior with natural light. Highlights at this venue include a ten-storey tower, a sculpture collection, a café with views across Central Park and work by many famous artists, such as Chagall, Kandinsky and Picasso, amongst others. Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum moved to its current purpose-built residence on 5th Avenue in 1959, which was designed by acclaimed architecture Frank Lloyd Wright.

Located in Central Park and close to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is often better known locally as simply 'The Met'. Founded in 1870 and home to a staggering two million art works, the Met ranks amongst the world's largest and represents pieces from Ancient Egypt, European masters and American modern art. Also in good supply are African, Asian, Byzantine, Islamic and Oceanic paintings and sculptures, as well as an unexpected collection of musical instruments and weaponry. Each year, more than five million visitors come here to marvel at the pieces by renowned artists such as Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, Pollock and Rembrandt. The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden offers added interest and boasts superb views of the Manhattan skyline.

John McEnroe Art Gallery

Located in the lively SoHo district, just a few blocks away from Cavala Park and the Juan Pablo Duarte Square, this well-known art gallery belongs to the famous tennis champion John McEnroe, who himself is also a great lover of art. Visitors should expect to find regular exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists.

The Museum of Modern Art is situated in Midtown New York, close to the American Folk Art Museum, the Radio City Music Hall and the Rockefeller Center, and is often referred to as simply the 'MOMA'. This is without doubt one of the best galleries in the city and is crammed full of an eclectic mixture of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. The Museum of Modern Art has many interesting features, including famous paintings by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, as well as a restaurant and a gift shop.

Situated in the Upper East Side, the Frick Collection is housed within an imposing and beautiful New York mansion. Built in 1914, this grand residence provides the perfect place to exhibit art and highlights include works by many well-known and world-famous artists, such as both Goya and Rembrandt, as well as stylish French furniture dating from the 18th century and a number of colourful oriental rugs. There is also a stylish wine bar which opens in the early evening.

This excellent art gallery can be found in the Upper East Side district of New York, just a block away from Central Park and the Consulate General of France. The Whitney Museum of American Art is a popular venue and concentrates on modern American art, with a superb permanent exhibition comprising almost 20,000 works and many other regular temporary displays. The building is a piece of art in its own right and is a curious upside-down pyramid shape.
